The case of the ‘honey trap’ professor made news headline worldwide when Oxford-educated Professor Paul Frampton was sentenced to five years in an Argentinian jail after being found guilty of drug trafficking. For eleven weeks, the particle phenomenologist carried on an amorous online relationship with a group of criminals posing as Denise Milani. With the promise of a new life with her in South America, the 68-year old Brit was then lured to La Paz, Bolivia in the hopes of meeting Milani. He instead was welcomed by a middle-aged man who then gave him a suitcase which he claimed belonged to Denise. Frampton was then given instructions to fly through Buenos Aires and then to Brussels, where he was told he would then meet Milani.
Trouble began for the professor when after waiting for 36 hours for an e-ticket to be sent to him, he decided to cancel the initial plan and fly back to the United States through Peru. He, however, was arrested at the airport with 2kg of cocaine hidden inside the suitcase that was meant for ‘Denise’. All claims of innocence fell on deaf ears and he was tried in a Buenos Aires court and sentenced to 16 years in prison, 5 of which he must serve in Buenos Aires.
