Decorating your farmhouse styled home for the holidays can be easy with these 10 inspiring tips

For many (including myself) breaking out the Christmas decorations is the best part of the year. But over the years I’ve learned a thing or two about how to elevate your Christmas decorations to a whole new level!

The following recommendations will be best suited for those of us that appreciate the rustic side of life. Living the farmhouse-style life is just so cozy and aesthetically pleasing, especially during the winter months when our favorite farmhouse trends quickly transform into the stuff of holiday greeting cards.

Here are 10 great ways to turn your farmhouse style home into a rustic winter wonderland

1. Eye-catching garland

For a real rustic flare, consider swapping out any brightly colored synthetic garland, for strands of bold and eye-catching all-natural garland. Dramatic bustles of garland lining your hallways, stair rails, or doorways, is a great way to add that classic vintage charm that farm-style homes are famous for.

2. Bountiful burlap

Of course, burlap is a must around the holidays. Although bits of burlap can be added to a farmhouse-style home at any time of the year, but the holidays open up the door for bountiful burlap!

The raw and rough texture and old-world charm that burlap fabric has, makes it the perfect choice for the skirt of the Christmas tree, an under-the-centerpiece cloth, and even burlap Christmas tree garland.

3. Plaid plaid and more plaid

Christmas is the time for plaid. Why? There’s just something so vintage and classic about a rich red and green patterned plaid, that reminds us of cozy blankets and warm woolen hats.

Adding ribbons and bows of fabric drenched in plaid patterns is a great idea for adding warm and old-timey charm to our farmhouse living space.

4. Wooden festive words

Wooden signs are a staple of farmhouse-style homes and during Christmas time, this still holds true.

Festive words like “joy” “rejoice” and “Peace on Earth” made of wood make great farmhouse table centerpieces. Either left as raw wood or painted in a festive shade, warm words are always welcome in the farm home.

5. Front porch display

Those of us with front porches might have a bit of an advantage in the race for who has the cutest farmhouse-style Christmas dream home.

The extra outdoor space at the entrance of a home is the perfect place for rustic items like old sleds, wooden signs, or small Christmas trees in metal tin planters.

6. Rustic wreaths

Big bushy wreaths placed on the front door, are just about as classic and rustic as you can get. Add burlap ribbons and sprigs of holly to top it off.

Wreaths can also be laid horizontally as centerpieces surrounding candles on a charming farmhouse table.

7. Magic mason jars

Fill mason jars with cranberries and topped with pine tree clippings, for a truly festive, red, and green farmhouse table topper.

Place lit candles aside the jars and the Christmas spirit will be overflowing with winter’s charm.

8.  Forest inspired centerpiece atop a farmhouse table

All things wooden work well in farmhouse-styled homes. Especially wooden pieces that appear as if they’ve just been collected from the forest.

Candleholders made of log (wood of any kind), would look truly magical places atop a rustic and sturdy farmhouse table, further the look and feel of being connected to our roots to nature. And furthermore, reminding us of how cozy our protective homes are, keeping us out of the cold winter nights.

9. Homemade Christmas tree ornaments from the heart

A real heartwarming touch to any home around the holidays, especially family homes, is to hand-make Christmas decorations with farmhouse elements.

A few ideas would be hardened faux sugar cookies, tin cookie cutters, twig figurines, or bows of plaid or burlap fabric.

Homemade tree toppers help make memories that can be brought back about the home each and every Christmas.

10. Warm white indoor twinkling lights

Our farmhouse-style homes are typically full of bold natural textures like raw wood, rough stone, and even patterned faux leather rugs. And during Christmas time, a popular trend in the world of farmhouse decor is red and green plaid.

With this bold pattern and color scheme already making your space considerably busier, it’s a good idea to keep your holiday lights neutral in color.

Clean warm white twinkle lights are the perfect touch to any Christmas space, elevating the magical feeling and winter vibes.
