Personally, I thought the ending was a little unclear, and many viewers are hoping for a season 2 renewal. Before getting onto the details let’s go over the basic understanding of the show.
The Society is a Christopher Keyser created American mystery teen drama television series that premiered on Netflix on May 10, 2019. The Society tells the story of a group of teenagers who are forced to learn how to administer their own community after the rest of their town’s inhabitants vanishes.
When students from the local high school return early from a delayed field trip, they discover that everyone else has departed. The city is surrounded by a dense forest. The outside world appears to have disappeared and cannot be reached by phone or the Internet.
To survive with few resources, the teenagers must devise their own set of laws. And of course there are many challenges the group has to face. The show’s popularity is high, and many viewers want it to be renewed.
Renewal and Cancellation Updates of ‘The Society’
The series was initially renewed for a second season, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was terminated after only one season. The show was canceled on August 21, 2020, due to the pandemic’s issues, which resulted in cost rises and production schedule difficulties. Well, Netflix did made a statement on the cancellation of The Society.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix said in a statement. Adding, “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”
Showrunner Chris Keyser stated to a source about the show. “We spent the last bunch of months getting ready to go back again, dealing with all the COVID protocols. And then I got a call from Netflix saying, ‘We have made this decision.’ It was obviously pretty upsetting and abrupt.”
Adding, “We were dealing with Netflix and the rise in the budget and all of that kind of stuff. There were ongoing conversations, we knew that there were challenges for this.”
‘The Society’ Was Left On A Cliffhanger
Well, as you all know the show was actually ended on a cliffhanger. We still don’t have a clear view of what happened and why everything happened. And even the showrunner stated about the ending of the show.
Keysar stated, “Obviously, no one wants to see the story they’re writing end, and I would like the characters not to end up as the children of New Ham, to have disappeared suddenly, abruptly, never to be seen again. But I’m not entirely in control of that.”
“This is extremely upsetting. But it would be for anyone. We have no choice but to, as so many people do within this period, deal with the losses that this pandemic has caused. I guess we’re like all those small businesses and restaurants that closed and aren’t going to reopen. Our people are out of jobs, but that’s true all around the country.”
Petitions To Renew The Show
The Society, as well as spectators and cast members, were all dissatisfied. The news spurred a petition on Change.org to continue the show, which reportedly has nearly 130,000 signatures, demonstrating that season 2 of The Society has a devoted audience.
