People opt for aesthetic treatments to enhance their appearance. Botox, derma fillers, and chemical peels are some procedures that help them get the look they want. Individuals who carry out these procedures are known as aestheticians.
To become an aesthetician, you must enroll in one of the aesthetic courses offered by an association or institute. The courses cover various topics intended to give you a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the treatments, methods, and applications.
Physicians, doctors, registered nurses, physician assistants, dentists, and dental hygienists are eligible to take these courses. While most are online, some require you to be present in person.
Once you complete your course successfully, the institute will reward you with a certificate, making you qualified to practice them. These are some essential details you must know about these programs.
What are the types of courses?
Most courses offering the study of aesthetics fall under two categories: facial and body. Facial aesthetics deals with enhancing an individual’s appearance through dermal fillers, Botox, and chemical peels.
Body aesthetics deals with intermediate and advanced liposuction, focusing on its history, risks, methods, fundamentals, and techniques. You also receive hands-on training during the course.
Topics covered in the programs.
Most associations divide the programs into beginner, intermediate and advanced, with various topics and objectives. Here’s a brief look at the courses’ subjects, duration, and goals.
Facial aesthetics
Beginner level
It is suitable for you if you have no previous experience in aesthetics. The program covers basic principles, dermal fillers, and Botox injection techniques.
Introduction
You are introduced to subjects like facial anatomy, the aging and beautification process, and the correct way of applying the 4Rs. The course’s duration is two hours.
Botox
You learn about Botox neurotoxins, their benefits, and the correct injection method.
Other topics include a history of neurotoxins, molecular structure, indications, and contraindications. It is a 7.5 hours program.
Dermal fillers
This 7.5 hours program introduces you to the facial aging process, analyzing applying the fillers, and the correct injection technique. It also includes the anatomy of regional facial nerve blocks and avoiding complications during applications.
Intermediate level
You are eligible for the programs under this category if you have a background in aesthetics and want to earn CE credits. The programs are online, in-person, or hybrid (a combination of both).
All the courses are usually of a two days duration and involve a virtual interactive didactic session and live hands-on training. Experienced physician instructors provide the training and oversee the sessions.
You also receive an opportunity to practice the application of Botox, chemical peels, and dermal on lifelike mannequins and lifelike models.
If traveling is a hassle, you can opt for exclusively online intermediate courses. The topics covered in them are entirely online, providing you the convenience of practicing on lifelike mannequins from your home.
Advanced level
You must opt for these if you want certifications for advanced aesthetic techniques like jawline and chin enhancement, forehead contouring, and non-surgical rhinoplasty.
The programs cover subjects such as jawline enhancement using dermal fillers and neurotoxins while understanding male and female facial anatomy. You learn about forehead anatomy and enhancement using Botox and fillers.
In non-surgical rhinoplasty, you observe how to perform rhinoplasty with neurotoxins without cutting or penetrating the skin. Danger and safe injection zones, indications, contraindications, and complications are other topics covered.
Body aesthetics
Intermediate level
It offers a basic understanding of tumescent liposuction and lipo-sculpting. Associations usually include liposuction history, ancillary pharmacology, operating room preparation, and infiltration techniques.
Most institutes require you to be a nurse, doctor, or physician assistant to take this course.
Advanced level
You can opt for this program if you’re a physician looking to acquire the skills necessary to begin liposuction. You can observe experts performing the technique on live patients.
Are all the aesthetic courses online?
Most of the beginner, intermediate or advanced programs are virtual. However, some like intermediate, advanced facial aesthetics and advanced liposuctions require you to be physically present at the institute.
Depending on your goals, objectives, and certification requirements, you can select from various courses. Once you gain the required knowledge and expertise, you become qualified to practice any technique with the proper method.
