Mary Stauffer was a teacher at Alexander Ramsey High School, Roseville at Minnesota. She used to teach algebra to the ninth grade, where, among her students was Ming Shen Shiue, her abductor and abuser.
In 1980, she had been kidnapped with her then 8 years old daughter, Elizabeth Stauffer (nicknamed Beth). The Stauffer family had been planning to go to Philipines, and she and her daughter went out for a haircut before the trip.

Ming Shen Shiue had been arrested at work, the day Mary had successfully escaped.
He had been sentenced to 70 years in prison for abduction, rape, and murder. Moreover, he was said to be given a chance of parole after 30 years in prison.
Fortunately for the Stauffer family, the parole was denied, and Ming is still in prison.
