The quest for smooth, desirable skin is often fueled by healthy eating, exercise, and a beauty regimen. Often times, you can find yourself worrying about tiny bumps on the skin on parts of your body that you can’t seem to get rid of no matter what you do.

It could be a case of keratosis pilaris, said dermatologist Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta. She clarified, “Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition that causes patches of rough bumps on the skin and is harmless.”

She took to Instagram to share a few dos and don’ts if you think you have this condition.

Use a moisturizer that contains urea or lactic acid

A moisturizer containing ingredients such as urea or lactic acid can help remove dead skin cells. For people struggling with uneven skin texture, skin care products containing these ingredients can help refine texture and provide deep exfoliation without being harsh.

Use a gentle cleanser

Cleansers or facial cleansers are usually foamy and give our skin that clean effect. The best way to protect your skin barrier and keep hydration intact is to use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t alter the natural pH balance. Using mild cleansers will also not remove too much moisture from your skin.

Use a humidifier when the air is dry

The key to controlling keratosis pilaris is to maintain skin hydration levels. To do this, it is advisable to stay in humid environments in order to protect the humidity levels. Since it is not possible to regulate the weather conditions, having a humidifier handy is the best way.

Not to do :

Don’t take long showers and baths

Taking long showers or exposing your skin to water for extended periods of time can rob it of moisture without you even realizing it. While it can be relaxing and calming for you, if you are suffering from keratosis pilaris, it is advisable to avoid it.

Don’t rub your skin harshly

Keratosis pilaris often causes tiny bumps on the skin that may or may not be red in color. Although they are easy to confuse with dirt formations, they are usually dead skin cells. Avoid rubbing your body too harshly with physical exfoliators and products that contain nut particles, as this can damage the skin barrier.

Do not bathe more than once a day

We know that sometimes it becomes difficult to avoid several showers a day. It is, however, advisable to limit it to once a day, said Dr Mittal Gupta.

We advise you to use caution when treating skin conditions. Consult your dermatologist before self-diagnosing!
